“If America fails,it will be because we let our country getsicker, more depressed, fatter, bankrupting our national budgetwith healthcare costs.”
— Robert F. Kennedy Jr.We were supposed to be able to trust the food we brought home.
We were supposed to get answers when someone we loved got sick.
We were supposed to see all our children grow into their full potential.
But the reality is, for too many families, that trust has worn thin.
Chronic disease is running rampant.
Many parents describe changes in their children.
Many of them have asked questions. Nobody has provided answers.
It was as if my child turned into a completely different child.
Others describe the frustration of bringing a concern to a doctor and feeling dismissed.
“I was told it’s fine and normal.”
These are families’ accounts, not clinical proof of what caused a child’s symptoms.
But the worry in them is familiar: something is wrong, and we still do not have an answer.
The CDC reports that more than 40% of school‑age children have at least one chronic health condition.
That is a childhood lived with illness, repeated across millions of families.
“American kids did not suddenly get gluttonous and lazy. Something is poisoning them, and we need to figure that out.”
We have spent so long learning to live with sickness that asking why can sound like rebellion.
The question reaches beyond any one family.
“We do not have a healthcare system in the process of failing. We have a medical industry in the process of succeeding. Americans have not become metabolically unhealthy by accident, but by social engineering that favors lifelong dependency over actual cures.”
“The stark economic reality of our current paradigm is that the health care system makes more money when patients are sick, and it makes less money when patients are healthy.”
You only really succeed when people are not well. And it’s because there’s so much money being made on chronic disease.
The people seeking care want to get well.
The businesses selling that care can keep earning while illness continues.
“A sick child is the best thing for the pharmaceutical industry.”
For the last 50 years, American children have increasingly been living in a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals.
“Kellogg’s makes Froot Loops for the United States alone. It is loaded with red dye, blue dye, yellow dye, and many, many other ingredients.”
“They make the same product for Canada. It’s all vegetable dyes.”
“We are allowing these companies, because of their influence over this body, over our regulatory agencies, to mass poison American children.”
The anger is about more than an ingredient label.
It is about discovering how close industry money can get to the institutions we rely on for guidance.
“You wouldn’t even believe this, but the American Diabetes Association took millions of dollars from Coke. I helped funnel it.”
And behind the argument about money are people who wanted more time with someone they loved.
“Instead of being healed, she was being managed.”
We should not have to become experts in a broken system to care for our families.
We should not have to carry the blame for every way it lets us down.
When it affects your family directly, you’re forced to fight.
It reaches further than anger at what has been lost.
“A healthy person has 1000 dreams. A sick person has only one.”
We want our families to have room for those other dreams.
For a life with more in it than managing the next symptom.
“There is no such thing as Republican children or Democratic children. There are just kids, and we should all be concerned with them.”
“This is to me, it’s not a political thing. This is a humanity.”
General Mills has reported completing the removal of synthetic dyes from its U.S. cereals.
The FDA has revoked authorization for Red Dye No. 3, with deadlines for its removal.
Federal law now allows whole milk in school lunches.
None of these changes ends chronic disease.
They do show that things families were told to accept can change.
We flipped the food pyramid upside down. We sent a clear message to Americans: eat real food.
We can ask more of the food we buy and the institutions we support.
We can keep asking what is making people sick, and insist that the answers stand up to scrutiny.
That is the work behind the hope.
